While what Jonce has suggested is possibly the problem it is possible & quite probable

that the RollPin that attaches the Arm to the MountPin has backed out ~ I have seen this on

many Vanagons including my 90Westy & a friends 89 among others ~ if you feel around the

area between the SeatBack & the ArmRest you will be able to feel the RollPin if it has backed

out unless it has completely fallen out & disappeared.
