I've been going back and forth on reupholstery options for two years now. I love the early fabric like is being discussed here, and I also dig the baywindow plaids. I looked at JoAnn fabrics, I checked out a few upholsterers here in Denver, and finally, I decided to go with SewFine. I think the clincher was that their shop recently moved from Amarillo to Denver so I was able to go in and discuss it all with them.

They gave me a full tour of their shop, showed me all of the patterns and different ways they make things, products, etc. They came out to my Vanagon armed with color swatches and spent considerable time with me figuring out what would look best, wear best, and fit my budget.

I have an '85 Wolfsburg Weekender so I needed the full-length bench, the jumpseat, and two front seats and armrests. All of their work is custom, sewn after you pay, so they did separate patterns for my two front seats because I have a standard driver and a Westy passenger, which is shorter, smaller, and on a swivel base. It took a little over two weeks for them to get everything sewn. I picked up the finished covers last weekend.

I have to say, I am ASTOUNDED by the quality of the work and materials. Pleats, back padding, seams, all look like they were done at the VW factory.

It cost me just under $800 for everything.

The only problem: I'm installing myself! I've done the jump seat and have started on the bench. I'm being extremely slow, methodical, and patient...I really don't want to mess this up. I'm taking lots of pictures and will post up the project on Samba when I'm done.

There were certainly less expensive options out there, but I think if you could see how much care and craft is put into SewFine's work, you would spend the extra few bucks. Plus, they're super nice people who took time to work with me and figure out exactly what I wanted.
