Something that makes the job a lot more easy and controllable is a pair of bent-nosed pliers. You can pull straight back, but the ends hook around to grip the flat part of the metal extension in front of the molded know so that you are not actually pulling on the knob. It makes removal incident-free. Then use a pocketknife blade to get under the bezel and rock the pressed pins out of the mounting holes and you won't break that, either.
