Can't speak for the Sprinter, but a good friend of mine has that layout in his Sportsmobile that is based on the same size Ford van. It has always struck me when I'm inside it that it really doesn't feel much larger than my Westy inside, even though the base vehicle is significantly larger. Layouts aside, it's hard to beat the VW T3 in space utilization for the simple reason that it is a box on wheels, and I doubt any manufacturer will sell a forward-control van of that size ever again, at least in the US.  As an aside, the most efficient layout I've seen is the T3 Dehler hightop van, which is similar to the Westy in interior layout, but also adds an interior shower and a toilet.
