There are several tubes that go into the top of the GasTank & they
all use RubberGrommets as seals ~ those Grommets get old & dry &
cracked on the outside & can actually turn to mush on the inside ~
they need to be replaced ~ Also there is a CrossOverVentTube which
goes from HighPoint to HighPoint across the top of the tank & the
plastic pieces that connect it into the tank can&do break which can
actually produce a major GasolineFlood under your Van if the tank is
ToppedOff ~ I have had that happen 3Times-2or3Diff' Vans ~ The 1st
time this happened it was on my 76 or 83.5 (don't remember) I found
that the high point of the crossover was clamped to the underside of
the body which I deemed a bad idea as it can not move with the tank if
the tank gets jostled around due to rough road travel ~ When I bought
my '90Westy the PO warned me that I'd end up with Gas on the ground if
I filled the tank & I told him that I was pretty sure that I knew why
& would fix it as soon as I got back to ABQ, as I knew that I had a
spare C'O'P' in the back of my '83.5 ~ As there was 400mi of hi'way
'tween me & home I headed off to the GasStation in my newly acquired
90Westy & promptly proceeded to "FillErUp" ~ BIG OOPs ~ lots of gas on
the ground.
