The shift rod runs through this depression...so it is needed for that reason. I have done this job several times. I do not drop the tank from the tank from the vehicle entirely. Jack the front up on jack stands. Pace a floor jack under the tank. Remove the filler neck. Remove the two bolts holding the straps and let the straps lean down to the ground. Lower the back of the tank about 8 inches. Te front of the tank will not lower because the straps are still holding it in. Now you have sufficient room to reach in and replace all parts. Keep in mind that the crossover pipe is secured to the body in the middle with a single screw and hook. I bend that hook out of the way before lowering. Easier if you also remove both front wheels.
