One thing about the Vanagon fuel system, if there is a place that fuel can leak out near the top of the tank, then rain water and road dirt can also get in. The reward will be the tank rusting out and also ruined fuel pumps and possibly the injectors. It may take years but at some point you will need the tow home or if far from home you'll get to pay a shop to do the work.

Good maintenance would include periodically testing the fuel tank and vapor recovery system to make sure it is working which includes the system being closed when the engine is not running. A telltale sign of a good system is occasionally hearing air escape when the fuel cap is opened.

I had a similar issue on my '86. I did fix the brunt of the problem, but it still happens on some of the pumps. I suppose I'm a bit less ambitious than some. When filling the tank, when I know intuitively that it is almost filled, I slow the flow and listen. You can hear the sound of the fill change easily as it approaches the filler, and simply click off. I admit this is the lazy guy solution...but it works.
