The Vanagon 2WD front wheel bearings are a bit of a weak point, especially the outers. Usually they give a lot of warning before failing to the point of explosion. If properly adjusted and lubed they should last a very long time. TO the parts list it is advisable to also replace the nuts and if things were really chewed up the thrust washers also. If the spindle is needed you will need to find used. As the 85 could have power steering or not, you need to make sure you get a matching spindle. At this point consider getting spindles with the calipers and get new hoses for 86 and later. Then you can have the later brakes. Spindle replacement may also expand to ball joints. If not recently done other front parts such as radius rod and lower control arm mounts can also get added to the list.

Dennis.

Hey forum- I just got a call from the shop. The grinding, wiggling and smell was coming from exploded passenger side wheel bearings. They say I need a new right front rotor, new inner and outer wheel bearings and grease seals (both sides) and possibly a new spindle. Now..... talk amongst yourselves and post your ideas! Thanks, Geneva and Mike 1985 Vanagon Westfalia (Bostig)
