BTW, the "higher speeds" for long running times that I am talking about are 60 mph. The long running times are hours. Flat or nearly so highway (I-40 in Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma. Very interesting situation a couple of years ago when I was still trying to figure out Vanagon driving: In New Mexico, temperatures around 95 F, running NW on US 87 toward Raton, oil pressure on the low end of what I thought it should be, and dropping more than I thought it should at idle (as I pulled off for fuel and a rest). Let the engine rest a bit, too, then headed on toward Raton Pass on I-25. Oil pressure running at around 18-20 psi. Headed up the pass and into a thunderstorm. Outside temperature dropped to around 40 F, with rain, hail, and snow. Snow plows working the pass (July). Oil pressure immediately rose to 40 psi WHILE STILL CLIMBING the pass, where it remained until I was back on flatter terrain and hotter weather.

That convinced me to install an auxiliary oil cooler. I've been happy with that decision. mcneely
