Hi, .I always do .. if I have a 1.9 stater on 'any' engine... I put in the 86 and later Bosch rebuilt.

Keep in mind that VW made the main battery cable, batt to starter, considerably larger in 86. On my own 85 I kinda cheated by routing a nice fat wire in parallel to the smallish 85 main batt cable. It had chronic hard cranking until I did that. Now it's fine ..with a 2.1 86 and later starter.

He replaced the ignition switch also, which had a seam on the plastic housing that had spread open (how that would happen I do not know). However, the key has to be on for the button to activate the starter. That obviates someone using the button to start the van and drive it away without a key, but if it does not bypass the ignition switch, how does it help me to self rescue?
