I wonder if you are aware that there are two parts that take fluid in a Vanagon automatic trans.. So ...just knowing the ATF level is good on the dipstick, is only one of the two fluid parts of the trans.

It wouldn't hurt to check the other part..or have someone do it. Whoever does it will need the classic 17mm allen wrench ( a very standard VW tool ) to check the differential oil , accessible under the van. It's quite important to know there is gear oil in the differential section . I get my rebuilt vanagon automatic transmissions from German Transaxle in Bend, OR . Been using them for over 20 years.
