I would start on it like this .........do all these checks... make sure throttle switch is making contact at idle. I would guestimate that about 60 % of 2.1 throttle body switches do not these days, due to wear. I have to fix most of them that I see. Make sure timing is not too advanced. Check Temp Sensor II resistance, Consider whether 02 sensor coax to the ecu is shorted. ( try it with 02 sensor unplugged ) Always consider vacuum leaks. You could have a big split in your air boot for example..doesn't happen very often, but is the kind of thingthat can cause weird symptoms that people don't think to look forsometimes. Work to determine if your Air Idle Valve is working and the Control Unit for it is good. It's nice to know that compression is at least fairly decent. Always consider and check and clean ground connections everywhere. If spark plug wires are ancient ...test or replace those. On waterboxer engines that have Bosch tune up parts on them, I find that those parts barely wear. If they are tired of course, their tired. .. but the tune up parts are 'usually not it' . Gotta at least inspect the spark plugs ..if they are worn badly .. replace, if wet, means theigntion is not working strongly like it should. Consider tired injectors and weak or poor spray pattern, I seldom find that, but I do recommend a good fuel treatment now and then like SeaFoam.

this is how it should start .. just get in, don't touch anything except to make sure it's in neutral. ( if manual trans, do not hold clutch down ) turn keyto on, listen for fuel pump to run, then shut off, while you confirm warning lights are working. Turn the key further to 'start.' It should jump right to a smooth steady idle .. if it doesn't ..things are not right. Any time it doesn't do that ...it should be worked on.

These engines can work fairly well with lots of things out of whack on them. It's important to keep up with them ... if they don't start like that ...they need good smart careful workon them.

resist the urge to think 'it's a component' .sometimes it is of course.. but so often it's a matter of cleaning, adjusting, finding details not working right. I would get after that throttle switch first thing !

for sure, 'It is just a blockage or leakage of fluids or electrons' .. the trick is getting someone competent to find and fix them all !
