Neil, I must have missed your post first time. I have the same motor, same climate, though I am on the hotter drier side of the mountains in the NW. I now have the oil/water heat exchanger in my 2.0 Jetta/Vanagon after running for a short while without that. I've been happy with 10/40 dino-oil in mine for the most part and I see about 200-210f normal highway operating oil temp on my Autometer instrument. Mine has 75-80psi Oil Pressure (VDO gauge) on initial start up with that the 10/40 and that subsides to about 60-65psi when up to running temp...at ~3500rpm, which is my 60-65mph usual cruising speed. My standard VW water temp gauge stays half way between the upper mark of bottom range line and the LED light fixture, pretty much without any variation due to vehicle load or incline or traffic..My oil temperature will go up to ~ 230f if I push real hard going up a long steep mountain pass. With 10/40 and the oil/coolant heat exchanger my engine seems to warm up, in our normal ~32f winter temps, in perhaps 2-3 miles..the coolant needle begins to move and the oil temp also. I've also run 10/30 and 5/20 during the winter. Works a little better for lower start up OP when it is cold. My warmed-up running oil pressure drops about 5psi lower, is all with the lighter oil. Dead hot (as hot as my motor ever seems to get is about 225-230f oil temp) my idle oil pressure is about 23psi. With the lighter oils the hot idle oil pressure stays about 18-20psi.

So there is a benchmark from a very similar motor though mine is laid-over like the diesel vanagon inline, and mine is getting to have a lot of miles on it. Don Hanson
