I end up restoring each part that goes on the new engine.
Forexample...
paint the exhaust pipes and parts with Flame Proofhigh temp exhaust paint..
first their primer, then top coat.
I see you have 'stainless steel exhaust' ..
you probably won't be painting that with high temp exhaustpaint.
Stock exhaust pipes will stay light gray ( there's red and black too )
..for quite a good while.
There's no reason for vanagons to have rusty exhaust pipes and mufflers
really.
The paint can even be touched up in place some once in a while.
I also can't help painting rear drums in high temp flat black stove paint ..
the insides of steel wheels wherethey rust where they sit against the
hub flange....
all kinds of details like that. Rust drives me crazy and it's so easy
to treat and prevetn.
On hoses......I'd use the proper german style hose clamps on all the
hoses too.
I hate the spring type ones..
and for sure don't use sharp edged american style ones..
get the right narrow , smooth against the hose, slightly curled up edge
correct german ones.
you know what I like to say ..
It's in the workmanship, not the parts.
Fancy new expensive parts aren't worth much installed sloppily or in haste.
that'ssure is a lot of repairs in one big go.
I didn't see gear oil for the trans on the list.
I constantly see power steering vanoagons with burnt smelling ATF ifor
their power steering fluid.
I suspect many people don't know about the screen in the PS resevoir ..
Changing out the old yucky fluid sure can't hurt.
Was all new brake fluid on the list ? ...I'd sure do that one.
It can go on and on. I often find battery boxes that have never been
cleaned or painted or serviced once in the poor van's 25 years of life.
I see rust, or bare metal, acid damage etc.
it goes on and on sometimes.
