Neil, what I have done is strip that paper off then paint the surface. You can get an exact match at Home Hardware with their paint scanner. Paint right over the glue that's left on the surface and the result is so close to the original look no one will ever know and it won't peel ever again. Paint roller seems to give a better look than a brush as the brush leaves brush marks.
