In my air cooled days I had an engine in parts in the cupboards in my kitchen of my apt, put it together on my kitchen table when I needed it. FWIW I got out of the split window world when I wanted something I could hang my arm out of.... That was my '71 (a great year for buses!). My first Vanagon came along when I was in Hawaii looking in the paper for someone selling an engine with heater boxes, I had a '79 (9 pass) and was being transferred to Chicago. My plan was to get a gas heater installed on the mainland, I saw an ad for an '86 Syncro and we took a look. Turned out to be the right thing for that part of the midwest.
