I see your point and when speaking of an alloy wheel that is a one-piece casting or forging it makes sense, but on a steelie that is built from two pieces (the inner hub portion that is welded to the outer rim portion--and I think the original discussion involved steelies --further  parentheses; see how the use of the term "steelies" skirts the entire semantic debate?) my argument would apply.   In the bike world you can buy the rim separately and may have occasion to do so, and I agree that in the car world that is extremely unlikely. But don't you think it was a terrific rant?
