Funny... until today I had never heard of Kickstarter. Now twice in one day in two different areas of my life (photography and Vanagons) I hear of this group.

Looked at their projects, some worthy, some... questionable. I agree with Karl in respect that if you are going to run in this type lifestyle, have a legitimate way to do this (see Maggie Dew and Larry Chase). Yet I also see the point of paying to be entertained (see the South American travels of Coyote) where I would gladly pay for the writing skills of certain people.

I don't think anyone is going to make their life's fortune begging on the net. Support them if you see the value (like NPR) or don't (like the professional beggars on the on ramps of highways).
