That's the beauty of Kickstarter - it's not begging - it's crowd funding. It is designed to meet a specific goal (publish a book, record an album, develope a video game, etc etc). THose who choose to donate do so knowing: a) get something in return (each Kickstarter has rewards based on level of donation) b) that if the project isn't fully funded the donors are charged nothing.

This is how the final stages of the Bus Movie was funded with many of the folks on this list donating if I recall.

As for the project we are discussing I thought the same thing at first - but there is value in the book that they will write. I'd much rather chip $20 towards something like this than some other things I can think of.
