Using Kickstarter to fund a book project is absolutely legitimate and the type of thing Kickstarter was designed for (although I see it used for music and video projects more). I have to agree though that the main purpose of "the book" is to fund the trip. So a definate grey area - having said that I'd still be willing to chip in a few bones for no other reason than it would make ME feel good.

As for donations - I think you'll find a million opinions on that. So put a donation link on a website for whatever you want - if people donate so be it, it is the donors choice after all.
