Yes they were. "All season" tires run the gamut from pretty decent in snow to truly awful. The Hankooks are among the best of them in my experience. The worst of them are downright dangerous on snow and ice, scarcely better than a summer tire. I never much cared for the Michelins in snow, and once found myself slipping and sliding so badly on a set of "all season" Bridgestone RD603's during an unexpected snow storm that I ended up pulling over for the night. I had a conversation with a Vredestein engineer once (an OE tire supplier to VW) who blamed lax U.S. standards.
