Ow! That has to smart.

Another lesser gotcha of running without the panel is that the alternator won't be stimulated to begin charging. I don't know whether an alternator will ever self-start, but normally the warning light circuit supplies a tickler current to the field coil to create a small initial magnetic field that is then bootstrapped as the output voltage starts rising (I know you know that, Mark).
