For the DIY owner there are numerous helpful threads on thesamba.com that discuss the overhaul of the Vanagon A/C system. I do not know if they reference the earlier WBX vans but it looks like the work could be done by an enterprising owner mechanic. If the components themselves seem sound, the initial step would be to take all the hose connections apart and "blow the snot out" (as it's so charmingly phrased) using big-truck air brake line dry stuff (methanol), plug in a new receiver and expansion valve, reassemble with new O-rings and charge. You could yank the hoses and have new ones made using the existing fittings and new barrier hose. I also received a vague and blanket two grand estimate when I first took my '87 to have the A/C looked at. I figure it was the mechanic's version of "Scram, kid" and have been learning more about the system as I go. Screw those guys. Full redo to come. These early units are poor in so many ways. Figure $2000 and up to have a pro replace all the hoses, dryer, etc. and then find out the condenser leaks, the compressor is bad, etc. etc. If you really want A/C here is your solution (and they are coming out with a DIY kit soon): http://www.smallcar.com/index.php?dispatch=pages.view&page_id=62 Costs more, but it will actually work. All the parts are there and the compressor is turning ok. As a first try I was planning to recharge it. How can I tell if its R12 or R134A? If its the former what type of shop could convert it?
