There is a lot less oomph in me too! You can tell if they are by looking at
the cables in the elbows. When the top is down, they should be taught, and
hang loose when up.
The top practically lifts itself with the gas springs. You just lightly
push up the top at the latch (it will stay half open) and then push the bar
for the final lift and lock. Much less wear and tear on you and the bar.
The Skylight Guy sells the Jack Bombay kit I have, and It's one of the
nicest mods I've made.

It's had a fair bit of use :)
I am thinking about gas springs in the future. I did notice that there is a
lot less oomph in the springs than there was 20 years ago. I assume
everything's still hooked up.
But my main concern is these bars wearing out!!
