Heat gun or hair dryer is my choice, specially on something soft like gel coat that is the finish on many Westie tops. I had to change decals often for sponsored races and events when I raced cars. Find something with a sharp-ish corner, like a windshield ice scraper or even a credit card...heat the decal then get one corner lifted....peel it back from there.

To position the new one....spray the area with Windex then apply the decal with it's backing still on. Position it to your satisfaction by sliding it around on the windex. Take a credit card or something similar and starting from the center, work all the air bubbles out from under the decal. Let it sit and dry for overnight, then carefully peel away the backing, leaving a perfect decal placement. Be careful for a few days till the decals 'cure'

This techinque also works for window tint film or those windshield header decals.
