The AC in the 85 campers is not that great even when working properly. Also there are no protective devices so when things go wrong parts get busted real fast. While simply charging the system with those can set ups in the stores sounds like a good idea you should either get some knowledge of air conditioning systems (including the legalities) or leave this for a pro. If the system has gone empty the most important task is to replace the receiver dryer and use a vacuum pump to get all the moisture and contaminants out of the system. Since the system was R-12 you will need to convert it to 134-A. There are many options and schools of thought. If you choose to do this yourself get a gauge set, a leak tester, and a vacuum pump and do some reading. With some knowledge this is not that hard to figure out. A pro will be able to leak test the system with nitrogen and if a leak is found while filling the equipment to recover the refrigerant. The pro will also be able to add the correct amount of oil.

The 85 Camper I bought 6 months ago has AC but I don't think it is working. All the parts are there and the compressor is turning ok. As a first try I was planning to recharge it. How can I tell if its R12 or R134A? If its the former what type of shop could convert it?

Thanks Jim
