I have a custom plain steel exhaust system on my inline motor that I wipe with Peanut oil, perhaps about once per month, at the same time as I lube my shifter linkage and generally inspect the underside of my van. I do it here in the Northwest US. During the rainy season, some rust will re-appear in between oilings, but it seems to help a little.

My exhaust is without a cat converter and has a Magnaflow stainless steel muffler. Someone on here suggested the peanut oil because it has a pretty high burning temp.
