You won't see antifreeze in the oil unless things are really bad. By then
you will know. A leak down test with full pressure applied to the cylinders
may give some indication blowing out through the cooling system. The loose
head thing is really hard to diagnose as the symptoms care often
intermittent and only present themselves under certain speed, load, and run
time conditions.
As for repair I start by checking head torque. There is some skill required
here. If the heads are truly tight and the problem persists that you will
have to dig deeper and pull them.

Thanks Dennis. I just bought a Ford truck with a blown engine. So I guess
that makes sense to me. How do I test that one. Aside from looking at the
oil. Will compression tell me.

I got my 86 out from winter dulldrums and drove 200 mile trip. Noticed
that reserve overflow was filled and the tank itself was low. I drained
some from overflow (when engine was sitting overnight) and then proceeded
to open the main coolant tank to put in more fluid. As soon as I loosened
the blue cap pressure started filling it up from the rest of the water
system. I quickly tightened it down. When I run it - it gets low again.
I have never had this problem of pressure being so great that I can't just
simply take main tank cap off. Could this be a bad cap? It is a newer one
which I got because it looked newer. Can't seem to find the old one.
Ideas?
