Maybe one reason VW never redesigned the tank was that if you had a watercooled Vanagon with the gas heater option (as a previous Vanagon of mine had) then that valley was still necessary for the duct work from the gas heater (damn I loved that heater!) and it also made resealing the tank a lot more challenging!
