Wheels have specs in addition to size, offset, lug pattern etc. They are rated for weight, maximum tire diameter and even application. The Vanagon alloys have an "LT" stamped on them for reason. Yes some Mercedes "S" class and the SUV's can weigh more than a Vanagon but Audi or other VW's do not. Many aftermarket wheels can be rated as low as ~1,400 pounds. From experience especially here in New York many alloy wheels are consumables even the factory ones. When wheels bend under a Passat or even an A8 I would be very cautious putting them on a Vanagon. Each tire has a spec written on the side. You can google them as each manufacturer whilst following a general rule can (but shouldn't) differ. I disagree with the concern with some wheels not being man enough. Several Mercedes have a greater weight then the vanagons.
