It was my first foray into something back there that wasn't a waterboxer. Was it as smooth as a waterboxer? No. But it was the last time I did a head gasket. I got one of the early imports and Peter and I made some improvements and adjustments over about 160K. I went down the muffler path also. All in all though, it had lots more power. Hills (up) were not something I had to plan for as much. MPG was better. I didn't have to worry when I went over 72 mph, as a matter of fact, I didn't have to worry about getting to 72 mph and/or holding it there. A pleasant experience for this old waterboxer guy. Let's not forget, it was what VW SA did to replace the old, unreliable waterboxer before they raised the deck and put in a 5 cylinder. I get kind of tired of hearing the Tiico's bashed too, Bill. It was. and is. a great first foray into a VW I4 that fit into a Vanagon hole.
