Thanks. As a Texas Veteran I get in free. without knowing your idea of what makes a good park, it is hard to answer. There is everything from deep wilderness at Big Bend Ranch in the deserts of West Texas to Battleship Texas. Some of the parks are not a lot different from a typical RV park. Others have miles of hiking trails in isolated splendor. Some of my favorites are Big Bend Ranch State Natural Area, Devil's River State Natural Area, Franklin Mountains State Park, Davis Mountains State Park, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Pedernales Falls State Park, Martin Dies Junior State Park (canoe or kayak into The Forks for best enjoyment, but the park rents canoes. You'd better like alligators up close and personal), Cap Rock Canyons State Park, Lost Maples State Park, Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Monahans Sand Hills State Park. Some of the State Wildlife Management Areas allow camping, too. Can be examined on the same web site. Black Gap Wildlife Management Area is east of Big Bend National Park, and is deep wilderness. Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area has desert bighorn sheep. Matador Wildlife Management Area provides a stark look at the rolling plains of the upper Brazos River country. Lots of choices, and it all depends on what you want. Historical forts and mansions? Wilderness? RV style mowed lawns? Beaches? Enjoy! -- David McNeely |
