Sounds like a PO or mechanic installed a different or modified barrel clamp. This is what it should have ORIGINALLY had:

Barrel 211 721 578 B Screw w/Hex Head N0102056 5x10mm

Unfortunately, I do not have one at the ready to inspect.

I've never seen one with an allen head screw before, even on the other VW models that used similar barrel clamps.
