I would not say that Dave, I'd say it is 'the' rating required .

as another indication of that look at the tire sticker on syncro vanagons.. says 6PR front,, 8 PR rear . it doesnot say 6PR and 8PR 'minimum' required.

Tire stiffness is a very significant factor in ride and handling, straight line tracking , turn-in, and cornering stability.

ALL well tuned cars have 'more' rear tire ...such as the syncro mentioned above .. All modern performance cars have a rear tire , and sometimes wheel too .. that is 'more ' ...larger, wider, next size up wheel etc..

so if people are going to settle for same size front and rear tires in 14 inch on a vanagon .. they should at least use VW's recommend grade of tire .. because the stiffness of D load tires is too much . and lowering tire pressure doesn't help ..then you loose other ways. And I don't think running really high tire pressure is right either.
