that left side supportcould be the one greaseworks was having fabricatedand then they sold them, or put them on their conversions. ..that left side big engine bracket, to replace the stock aluminum one there. Ithink they were 350 bucks even.

There are at least 4 variations of bars that I know of ..

1. stock US model 82 DV .....both bars rubber-mounted at both ends, under tie-bar, small rubber mounts.

2. stock US 83 5 speed model......solid-end bars, no under tie-bar, big rubber mounts , huge 14mm diameter bolts going through the rubber mounts. ( the engine also is mounted 2 inches further aft in the 83 model ..due to the 5 speed trans being 2 inches longer than the 82 4 speed. ( Very conveniently ..this is the exact same fore-aft location that an 83 and later water boxer uses .. this means an 83 diesel 5 speed tans, and engine bars , will fall rightinto any 83 and later 2WD waterboxer vanagon..but the 5 speed does not just fit right into an 82 vanagon. )

3. a euro version with solid-ends bar on one side ( right side I think ) , rubber mounted ends on the other bar, and big rubber mounts.

4. a euro syncro version ...bars mount engine lower, there are tabs on the rear ends of the bars to mount the skid plate to. Large rubber mounts.

So it is possible to have a matched set where one bar is solid on both ends, and the other is mounted in rubber with brackets at both ends. ( see# 3 )

They used diesel bars and oilpan but fabricated the passenger side aluminum support out of 1/2" plate. Amazing looking and did not appear a backyard mechanic can cobble together. Got me wondering if the parts was some obscure diesel Vanagon part or from an aftermarket source. > > > BenT > > On May 15, 2013, at 10:03 AM, mark drillock <mdrillock@COX.NET> wrote: > >> Since most people want to convert a different year and >> since 83 diesel Vanagon parts are much less common than 82 diesel parts, >> most people will have more issues to overcome to convert their >> waterboxer van.
