Spraying a little penetrating fluid or WD40 at cable where it passes through the grommet may help. The cable can get a little "stuck" at that spot. You've likely done this, but apply penetrating fluid to the tie rod nuts and threads. If the outer ends are original, assume they'll be seized onto the tie rod. OTOH, if you're rebuilding things, the entire tie rod can be found new. The Vanagon/EV forum gallery on thesamba.com should have lots of pics. There should also be threads with pics of front end rebuilds. There's mention in the archives of Pittman puller sizes for tie rod ends and elsewhere. IMO, pressing the lower ball joint in/out is best done by a shop. All they need is the knuckle with part still in it. OR, one can rent the tools. Paul Guyzk (sp?) did a nice write on that.
