The struts might be a replacement for the springs on an unloaded poptop but mine tends to have 2 kayaks on it most of the time. It sounds like you do have the same problem as in the link. My problem is that one of the internal springs or the cable it is attached to is broken so one side is good and one side is not and you can surely feel the difference between the 2 with the weight on top. If I don't have the kayaks on the struts (I have the heavy-duty ones) do hold the top up (in fact the top rises majestically by itself) so maybe you could get by without the springs -- I need both.
