There is a Vanagon Savvy mechanic's shop in Bishop. On the north end
of town, near the indian casino right on the highway. They've been
mentioned before on the list here and said to be good. I know they have
multiple vanagons out front in their parking area and always seem quite
busy when I pass through Bishop twice yearly in my ABA / 1.8 diesel tranny
5sp vanagon.
Turn around, coast down Sherwin Grade and look for the Millpond Rec
area...campground just off the highway a mile or two to the
west...Overnight there and go to the shop in the morning. Or, continue
through town to the southern outskirts and try the Brown's Town
Campground...They are nice there also.
Bishop is an interesting town. Next place headed north of any size is
far far...and through some significant terrain that is quite
remote...Probably not a good go with an ailing transmission. You want to
travel that country without the distraction of your vehicle's health...Fix
it in Bishop is my suggestion. You are about as far, by road, from a
real big city as you can get in the US Iy Vanagons could fly, you're only
maybe 100 miles....but by road....more like 300.
