Logic prevails and is the closest.

The term "boonies" is short for "boondocks"

"Boondocks" is the Anglicized spelling of the 'Tagalog' (Philippine main dialect out of 70+) word 'bundok' or mountain.

During WWII (yeah the big one) American troops where often spirited away from the occupying Japanese forces by Filipino guerrillas to the 'bundoks'. The Japanese were never able to penetrate the mountains. In the common vernacular, going to the 'bundok' was generally understood you were going into the wilderness or the middle-of-nowhere as we say here.

When GI's station in the Philippines returned stateside, they brought the term back with them. Next time you R.S.V.P an invitation, consider that the words/terms you are using may not have started English or American

or... go figure.
