I've successfully replaced the bearings on my alternator (going on 15 years, still working). I noted the bearing numbers but dont have them handy. Others may disagree but I don't see anything wrong with doing this. The bearing at the end opposite the pulley sits in a plastic cup. If that is messed up then try and find a new one when you get the bearings. I got my bearings from an industrial supply house, but I bet you can get them from an auto electrical place - the kind that rebuild alternators etc.
