VW stopped selling the diesel Vanagons in the U.S. in 1984, so something is odd. It may be worth confirming the year, whether this camper started out as a diesel, or whether it is a gray market import. (If it's a European spec camper with a larger diesel engine it's an entirely different animal.) The 1600 diesel campers are almost dangerously slow IMO - not so much in terms of top speed, but in terms of acceleration. When driving them I found I sometimes had to ride the shoulder when merging onto a highway in order to build up enough speed to safely merge. That's a little too slow for me, and I say that as someone who drives 2-cylinder cars regularly and finds the wasserboxer engine plenty peppy. Of course your take may differ from mine.
