I bought my first VW van in 1980 - a '68 loaf. That thing was as spartan as a vehicle could be, but that big wide windshield made it for me. I was hooked. I lived in Alaska at the time - and the panoramic views through that windshield were fabulous. I could see so well. Speed wasn't so much an issue. There are not many places in Alaska - if any - where traffic gets to 70 mph. Hit a moose at that speed and you are in a world of hurt.

I bought my first Vanagon - an '85 GL - in 1990. I was - and still am - forever hooked on the Vanagons. And even bigger and better view through the windshield, better all around visibility - and all the other features - plus being able to drive highway speeds in the Lower 48. What a boon!

I cannot imagine NOT having a Vanagon in my daily life. I have managed to accumulate three at this point, two '88 GL's and a '91 Carat. But have decided to sell one of the '88 GL's. I will keep one as my daily driver, and the Carat - being more plush - will be kept as my touring vehicle. I have a bad left knee - and as it worsen's the other "88 GL will be sold as well, leaving me with the Carat with it's automatic transmission. While the Carat will be able to keep it's speed and stay up with traffic - by that time I will have slowed down sufficiently that handling the Carat should still be easy driving.
