Thanks to all who suggested the problem was with the back latch, not the
front, I found that the back eye on the cable had come adrift. Hard to see
unless you know where to look. Now I have to fab up some kind of connector
- tough to get my fat fingers in there. And the back latch doesn't want to
come out. Thanks to all who responded, David
