Could be. Or as Steven suggested, maybe that centre wire wasn't plugged in tight enough.

If I'm not misunderstanding, if there was a gap between the cap contact and the wire, voltage could've arced between the two and hastened the wear you saw. But that's just a wild guess on my part.
