For most mobile VHF antennas (1/4 or 5/8 wave), front or rear of a Vanagon has enough metal, even for 6 M (not perfect, but about as good as it gets on a vehicle). It's hard to mount in the middle of the metal on a Westy, front or back, so you take what you can get. I'd guess he's most concerned with 144/440, where the only place with insufficient ground plane is in the middle of the van. Is 6 M mobile active (I've never bothered/tried)?
