I have done the conversion—a half-a$$ed one that works—using the changeover kits you get at parts stores for a total cost per car of about $35.00. I haven't changed anything but the special charging valves to fit the new apparatus and loaded in R134. Everything else remained the same. I have done maybe six cars now. They work about as well as they ever did. R134 is not quite as efficient as R12, so it won't be quite as cold, but neither will the planet be quite as hot.

Yes, you can buy updated compressors, condensers, flushes, etc optimized for R134. Or not.

But whatever problem you had before, whether a leak or a bad compressor or whatever, you will have to fix. And if the drier has been exposed to outside air for more than a minute or so—and it has, of course, by now—it must be replaced.
