Since sandy beaches and other wet, muddy locations (plus rain showers) are my typical destinations, I got rid of carpets long ago, and now use a composite rubber mat called Elephant Bark, http://www.rubbercal.com/elephant_bark.html. It's the stuff used in gym floors.  Not elegant but bomb proof, and it comes out easily for cleaning and is warm to the feet.  I got the 5mm (3/16") red dot, and now think the candy corn would be more fun.   $8.50/ft, for 4' wide, so you need 5'.

Wood would never work for me.
