If you mount at the front, it's just a matter of inches to connect to the ground plane.

He was talking about mounting at the rear, grounding to the hatch - there's a lot of local plane there.

There are also antennas which don't require a ground plane, of course. At HF, no vehicle (less than a full size semi-trailer) can provide an adequate ground plane.
