Jeff, When I run the Dometic cooler on propane, I have always used it outside the Vanagon. When I used it with my Coleman pop-up trailer, I would use it inside the pop-up tent camper (which always had lots of air circulation). The units do generate some heat, and there are exhaust fumes (which are minor). In the Vanagon, my main issue was space. Taking it out of the Vanagon just opens up all sorts of room. It also makes a great extra seat outside. I never had it connected directly to the Vanagon propane system, so there was always the issue with the external propane tank and the hose connection. If I was leaving the Vanagon unattended for a long period, I would have no issue with leaving the Dometic cooler inside the bus, and leaving either the roof vent open, or the sliding windows. It does not really generate that much heat. I think I will look at what I would have to do to hook up a one pound disposable propane cylinder to the cooler to add to the flexibility. There has been some banter on the Westy Dometic fridge. I find that I rarely use the Westy Dometic fridge and use the Dometic cooler for most of my needs. I like having the cooler outside. While the Westy has the built in stove, I also prefer to use a propane stove outside. I guess it is all a matter of personal choice........ Cheers! Dumb question time. Is the issue with venting the exhaust gas or the heat or both?
Is it really that big a deal if all your windows are open? I can see it would be an issue with propane heat, but isn't the exhaust off a fridge negligible in comparison? Especially in summer with all the windows open and top up?
Trying to recall whether or not propane fridges (full size in cottages etc) are vented. Don't believe they are?
