on useful techique is to put exactly 4.5 qts in the engine and oil filter,
run it, confirm oil pressure, let it sit a minute, then see where that
level is on your whatever dipstick, and mark that spot as nominally full.
some may enjoy this, since it's friday.
On a modern BMW car with no dipstick on the engine at all, but rather an
electronic oil lever sensing system..
If the 'add oil' light goes off, the technician is advised to add a qt
of oil.
If the add oil light does not go off, the next step is to drain the
oil completely,
and add the correct amount.
If that doesn't make the add oil light behave ..start
trouble-shooting that circuit.
( per a trade magazine for professional automotive technicians ..'Import
Car' I think. )
See, even BMW in the 2000 and teens era ,on 80,000 dollar cars, uses the
same old very low tech that we do in our engine conversions on 31 year
old VW Vanagons..
all for lack of a 2 dollar dipstick too.
That's real progress all right., lol.
